LOCALS, 2020-2021
“Locals” is a project exploring the problem of population migration and the concept of borders, the decisions about which are constantly affecting our lives. Usually we associate borders with the processes of human movement, but history presents us with the situations, when the borders “migrate” over populations. Coming form Belarus and being based in Poland, I witnessed the traumatic experience of the previous times, when about a third of the lands of pre-war Poland were annexed to the Soviet Union, and in return it received lands that were previously part of the German state. Forced relocation in peripheral territories mixed the lives of millions people of all the nationalities.
In the photographic projections I place archival images on the buildings, nature from territories that were previously considered a unity, but are now located on different sides of the border. Although photo projections were made in different countries, locations, it is difficult to determine their exact sources. The borders are conditional and imposed, heaven and earth are one unity.
The trauma, nostalgia and love experienced by people during the process of searching for their new home found a symbolic expression in the form of a patchwork quilt. Families both from Belarusian, Polish and Germans side provided me with their personal archives to work on the topic.
The current migration crisis that have ignited on the territory of Belarus and Ukraine, although of a different nature, has become another element in an endless problem when geographical, political maps become the guides of our life.
The project consists of installation with patchwork blanket, printed photographs and slide-show.

“Locals” to projekt fotograficzny odnoszący się do zagadnień miejsca, migracji ludności, pojęcia granicy i tożsamości kulturowej. Białoruską artystkę, na stałe mieszkającą w Polsce, interesuje problem migracji na przykładach obszarów, które po II wojnie światowej zmieniły przynależność państwową. Skupia się na historiach ludzi pochodzących z części współczesnej Białorusi — obszarów niegdyś należących do terytorium Polski oraz współczesnego Wrocławia i Opola będących przed wojną częścią terytorium niemieckiego. W swojej pracy bada i wizualnie reinterpretuje zagadnienie związane z “poczuciem miejsca”. Chociaż wydarzenia te zaszły wiele lat temu, kwestie przemieszczania się ludzi i zdobywania poczucia przynależności do konkretnego miejsca — domu, stały się jeszcze bardziej aktualne w zglobalizowanym świecie.
W swoich fotograficznych projekcjach autorka zestawia i nakłada archiwalne obrazy z terytoriów, które wcześniej uważano za jedność, a obecnie znajdują się po różnych stronach granicy, tworząc unikalną peryferyjną tożsamość “miejscowych”. Trauma, nostalgia i miłość — doświadczane przez ludzi w trakcie procesu poszukiwania swojego nowego domu — znalazły z kolei symboliczny wyraz w formie patchworkowej narzuty, obiektu fotograficznego.
